Let’s get into it. Everyone’s been buzzing about Harry and Meghan, our not-so-sweethearts of Sussex. It’s the ultimate reality show, isn’t it? Do you stay in your royal gilded cage or do you fly free and face the work-a-day commoner world? The Duke and Duchess hit eject, traded the tiaras for their telemarketer headsets, and went about the business of becoming the ultimate Royal Rejects.

Goodbye Windsor, hello Hollywood!

Well isn’t that the plot twist we didn’t know we were missing on our screens? With their exit, or should I say ‘Megxit’, they’ve been stripped of their HRH titles, immortalised on the royal website with conspicuous absence. Yep, gone, vanished, just like a poor old magician’s assistant, or, more aptly, like a failed Netflix state.

What have these two really done except turning back on a thousand years of tradition? They signed up for a package deal – you can’t pick and choose the components of a heritage that’s been carefully maintained for centuries. Harry even wrote about protecting the life he and Meghan wanted to have. But here’s the thing – you can’t have your layer cake and eat it too, Harry.

Instead, they decided they didn’t want it, not the full banquet with all the trimmings. They wanted freedom, they wanted independence. And who wouldn’t, right?

But here’s the thing about freedom: it’s not an all-access pass to the world’s stage. Freedom comes with responsibility. Freedom comes with the acceptance of certain realities. It’s not all sunsets and vineyards. It’s a hard reality, one met with criticism, nitpicking and judgment from every corner.

It’s easy to blame the press, the institution, the family. But when one becomes a public figure, and let alone a Royal, facing criticism is part of the deal. No matter how outrageous or unfair, it’s part of the job description. Do they think stepping away will shield them from scrutiny? Good luck with that.

And I get it, our Prince Harry was born into this. He didn’t choose it. But Meghan? She courted this willingly. Don’t act surprised. You knew the score. You willingly sat down at the poker table, bluffed the whole game, and then are surprised when you’re asked to show your cards. Uncool.

So, Harry and Meghan, I wish you well in your newfound life. I hope it’s everything you dreamed of, I truly do. But remember the last scene of The Truman Show: once the curtains come down, the audience disperses and your life is your own again. Will you find the freedom satisfying, or will you yearn for the grandeur you left on the other side of the pond? Only time will tell.

Enjoy your freedom, Royal Rejects. The world is watching. The spotlight is on you now, more fiercely than it ever was.

Chief Unmasker, signing off. Enjoy the show!
